Desktop Macs take up more space, but because of expandability and better components, they tend to be more useful even today.

Also, I doubt you will chose to go this route, but if you want to get me an older beige desktop, just make sure it is in good condition, includes a keyboard and monitor (or adaptor), and is not on this list, as those computers should generally be avoided.
